Some people celebrate the birth of a child with a cigar and then others do this…
“I’ve always been a fan of the Transformers,” Tom Rhoads stated to the crew at mim. “And when my son was born I decided to make the statue.”
The statue stands at 18 feet tall and built from a used Volkswagen, yes that’s right a used Volkswagen, in this economy who can afford to chop up a new Camaro and besides some of us liked the cartoon characters better!
The statue took him and a friend a year to build in their spare time. A crane had to hoist the 1200 lb robot onto its feet after the welding was completed. Its legs are made of steel and angle iron to keep it secure.
So, I stumble upon this guy Patrick Bolvin on YouTube. Outstanding visual effects artist, and clearly a fan of all sorts of toys. He does excellent fight sequences, dance choreography, lighting, camera work… he’s just plain good.
I had to dedicate a ‘Top 3′ list just to him for these three unbelievable pieces of work:
IAN SAYS: Pure genius. I think the 1st video is my favorite, I mean c’mon – Bruce Lee. But the camera movemnt in the 3rd video is creative and fast paced. It’s reminescient of the filming stlye of BSG – speciffically the space fight/flight sequences. Very good.
CRAIG SAYS: Hands down the best stop motion I have seen to date.
As a young boy growing up I don’t think I saw anything cooler than gianttransformingrobots fighting other gianttransformingrobots. Even though I did not get to watch Transformers I had a steady diet of toys (official and cheap rip offs), transforming lego creations, Robotech (ok, so its not Transformers but the veritech fighter was pretty sweet), and my imagination.
Sadly enough, I along with most children, did not have the ability to make my imagination real. That’s why we grow up. To make our dreams reality. Like these guys…
Ummm, maybe “grow up” was not the term I was looking for.
IAN ADDS: I am waiting for 5 people, to come together, to form Devestator!
LEVI SAYS: “I don’t know, it doesn’t look all that diffi- … we’ve got a greaseman” “We’ve got a greaseman!”
